All glass wine bottles have a concave underside. The reason is to help create vacuum for suction cups attached to mechanical arms that move the bottles along the filling plant line. The Basso coaster makes use of this property of the bottle by having a convex bulb. When putting the bottle down on the coaster, even if doing so slightly carelessly, the bottle’s position “magically” self-adjusts to centre.
