The Ekberg house has been designed to make the most of the remarkable sea view from its site on Muskö island, Stockholm archipelago. From the access road, the lot slopes slightly downwards toward the southeast facing shore.

The house is both ‘heavy’ and ‘light’, with béton brut side walls and wood or glass frontal walls – sampling and combining modern construction with the traditional (vernacular) cottage. Roofs are green sedum for insulation, rain water management and to blend in with the surrounding nature. The roof’s pitch is hidden by the house sides and is asymmetrical, with a shorter plane over the panelled entrance front and a longer, larger and lesser-angled plane over the living areas, leading the vision towards the outdoor deck and sea view.

The interior layout features strategically-positioned sightlines, most notably transversely along the main partition wall, punching through the concrete side walls. Thus, complementing the spatial flow towards the view. Behind the fully glazed sea front are the open kitchen, dining and living room. The master bedroom shares this view and is adjoined by a private closet space and an en suite bathroom.

The materials reflect the exterior, with exposed concrete walls, natural/dark stained wood panels/cupboards and a polished concrete floor.

The main house is complimented with a guest house and sauna respectively. The three structures of the same design create a mini hamlet loosely defining two sections of the natural garden.
